Combined X-Ray Computed Tomography and X-Ray Fluorescence Drill Core Scanning for 3-D Rock and Ore Characterization: Implications for the Lovisa Stratiform Zn-Pb Deposit and Its Structural Setting, Bergslagen, Sweden

Abstract We present the results of a pilot study that integrates automated drill core scanning technology based on simultaneous X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and fluorescence (XRF) analyses to provide high-spatial-resolution (<0.2 mm) information 3-D rock textures structures, chemical composition, density. Testing its applicability for mineral exploration research was performed by analyzing 1,500 m from Paleoproterozoic Lovisa stratiform Zn-Pb sulfide deposit, which is part larger system also including Cu-Co Fe-(rare earth element) mineralization, hosted highly strained West Bergslagen boundary zone in south-central Sweden. The obtained data complements derived structural field mapping, logs, analysis as well multiscale geologic modeling at Lovisa. Data integration reveals macro- mesoscopic folding S0/S1 asymmetric steeply SE-plunging F2 folds N-striking vertical F3 folds. Stretching lineations, measured directly imagery, trend parallel fold hinges modeled ore shoots nearby Håkansboda Stråssa Blanka Fe deposits. textural character zones revealed XCT-XRF highlight remobilization Zn Pb primary layering into ductile brittle structures. downhole bulk geochemical trends seen traditional assay are generally comparable but with systematic variations some elements due currently unresolved XRF spectral overlaps (e.g., Co Fe). deformation pattern explained D2 sinistral transpression along response regional north-south crustal shortening ca. 1.84–1.81 Ga. Local refolding caused D3 east-west resulting dextral zone, presumably 1.80–1.76 Based polyphase aligned hinges, we postulate transpressive exerted both strong control orebody geometries neighboring deposits within zone. conclude combined technique provides valuable tool characterization, generating continuous sets, potential increasing precision efficiency mining.
